Limited Edition Prints

Andrew Kitson limited edition prints are printed on high quality acid free art paper with non-fade printing inks. The print will be hand signed by Andrew and numbered on the border.  The signatures and numbering are traditionally done in pencil, as ink from a pen may fade over time. Some of the limited editions are countersigned by the driver or a personality connected with the subject.

Open Edition Prints

Andrew Kitson open edition prints are also printed on high quality acid free art paper with non-fade printing inks. An open edition is not limited in number, therefore the edition may be reprinted if demand is high. These prints are very affordable and are usually unsigned.

Remarques

When purchasing an Andrew Kitson print, you may wish to consider having a remarque added to the border, to make your purchase exclusive and add value. A remarque is an original toned pencil sketch, drawn by Andrew on the border surrounding the image. The subject for the sketch will be related to the subject in the painting. It could be a driver portrait, helmet detail, a study of part of the car or anything of your choosing you feel may be suitable. Each sketch will be unique and approximately 3 to 4cm high and signed. By adding a remarque, not only will you have acquired a fine limited edition print but a unique piece of original Kitson artwork.
An example is the portrait of Gilles Villeneuve, added to the print border of the limited edition 'Against All Odds' , print number 462 of 700. This is included in this photo montage of four different original pencil remarques, click on the image to see an enlargement of the Villeneuve one. The cost of a pencil remarque will be £40.00 (GB sterling), in addition to the cost of the print and post and packing charges.

Artist's Proofs

An artist's proof is exactly the same as the limited edition print, the only difference is the way the print is numbered by the artist. When an edition is printed, a number of prints are initially run through the printing press and then checked for colour balance, alignment etc, and 'proofed' by the artist. Upon approval the main edition is then run.

Traditionally, the artist would receive these first copies to sell as part of his royalty payment. These are usually offered for sale when the limited edition print run is sold out or no longer available. If any of these 'proof' prints are not up to standard, they are destroyed. The number of artist's proofs printed is usually around 50 copies or 10% of the limited edition print run. The artist's proofs are hand signed by the artist, in pencil just as the limited edition and hand marked AP, denoting it is one of the proofs. In all cases the printing plates are destroyed upon completion of the print run to ensure that reproduction is no longer possible.
